70 percent of Myanmar’s population lives in rural areas and relies on the forest for food, resources and economic opportunities. The country is relatively undeveloped compared to its neighbors and has conserved many of its natural resources—including Asia’s most extensive intact tropical forests. However, Myanmar has the third-highest deforestation rate in the world, thanks to over-harvesting, logging and agricultural expansion. Myanmar’s future depends on the protection of these forests that are the lifeblood of people and endangered wildlife.
Preserving these forests is key to regional carbon storage that can mitigate climate change as well as to the maintenance of freshwater resources that millions of people rely on.
